Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the outside fun has to be.  Far from it!  Fall is a fantastic time of year to get kids out and about.

Simply rug them up, and get outdoors exploring.

Little kids love searching for things, so a Fall scavenger hunt is perfect for keeping them entertained as an outdoor activity.

It’s not even big things that kids like searching for.  Have you noticed how much fun they can have with a stick and a pile of dirt?  It’s imaginative play at it’s best.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to climb into their heads to know exactly what they are thinking as they spend half an hour or more using a stick to circle and make patterns in the dirt.

On your next outdoor adventure, why not try a scavenger hunt with them.  This printable Fall scavenger hunt is perfect for keeping the kids entertained and it is so easy to use.

Not undertaken a scavenger hunt before?  Don’t worry as there is really nothing you need to organize other than printing off the hunt sheet that I have prepared for you.

How To Get The Most Fun From The Fall Scavenger Hunt

The first thing to ensure is that each child has their own scavenger hunt printable sheet.  Whilst it is good to teach sharing, preschoolers often have a hard time understanding this concept.

Besides, they are also at an age where they are undertaking individual exploration and they need to have immediate access to what they are looking for.

And finally it’s just a lot more fun to actually hold your own Fall scavenger hunt sheet!

Explore with the Scavenger Sheet and Pencil in hand

Once all the kids are set with their own scavenger hunt sheet and pencil it is time to get exploring.

Each time the child finds something on the hunt sheet list, they are to mark that item with a cross.

Some items they might be able to pick up and take with them, such as a twig or leaf, but others they will just have to stand and admire.

Completing the Fall Scavenger Hunt Printable

You might like to set a time limit on exploration and then enjoy a morning tea or picnic lunch together.  This will just create added fun as you throw down a picnic rug and reach for special treats.

This is a good time to check those easy finger food recipes that the kids will love help making and be excited to eat. That’s two activities rolled into one!

Whilst you are eating you can discuss all the things that were found and if there is anything left to find on another day.

This is also a good opportunity to discuss the items found using the following prompts:

  • What shape was the find?
  • Did it smell?
  • Was it hard or soft in texture?
  • Was it edible?
  • Was it living?
  • What color was it?

It’s amazing how much conversation this will start and it will also create a lot of added excitement as the children discuss all their finds.

Download The Fall Scavenger Hunt PDF

All you need to get started on a fun day’s activity is to download the Fall Scavenger hunt PDF.  You can do this right now from the free printable library.

I recommend printing onto some white card stock so it is a bit more hardy when out and about.  You may even want to laminate it for future use, or you can just print off again for another day’s exploration.

So the start of Fall is definitely no excuse to become hermit’s indoors.  Outside play is just as much fun in the cooler weather as it is in the warmer weather.

With the added bonus of a fun activity, the kids won’t even notice the weather and they will be off exploring in their gumboots and rain jacket.  Sounds like a lot of fun doesn’t it!

If your kids are a bit older and would prefer to read the hunt ideas rather than just have pictures, then you will love this written nature scavenger hunt.

Have you ever completed a scavenger hunt with the kids before?  What did they most enjoy about it?  I would love to hear your experiences below.
