Aside from cupcakes, cookies are the next best thing at kids parties. I mean, who doesn’t love a cookie! With the amount of cookie variations, it is hard not to find something to please.
Just like cupcakes, cookies are also super easy to theme. What do I mean by this? Well simply by baking your own cookies and using a particular cookie cutter, you can literally turn your cookie into anything that matches your party theme.
Now, I’m not good in the kitchen. I don’t like baking. Not one little bit! So when I suggest that you bake something for a party, I guarantee that it is going to be easy.
There is no way that I would be spending a lot of time on something in the kitchen if there was an easier option. I’m an in there, out of there kind of girl when it comes to the kitchen.
That’s why I love these shortbread cookies. It’s a simple recipe that can be used time and time again to suit whatever party theme you are having.
Sounds good? It totally is.
The first time I made these cookies was for my daughter’s 4th Frozen birthday party. They turned out so well, and the kids absolutely loved them, so now I tailor them to suit whatever theme we are currently having.
The most recent example was for my daughter’s Rock star 7th birthday party. This time we turned them into stars.
The recipe is really simple. The great thing is that they can also be made ahead of time and frozen until closer to the party date. That’s a huge plus for me, as the less time prepping the day before the party the better. We literally take them out the freezer to thaw the day before and then decorate.
So how did we make these adorable star cookies? Well, I’m glad you asked!
Ingredients You Will Need:
- Shortbread cookies
- Pre-made icing
- Piping Bag (if using a large tub of icing)
- Sprinkles
4 Steps To Simple Star Cookies
Step 1:
Follow the recipe for the shortbread snowflake cookie recipe.
It’s fine if you want to make them and decorate straight away. Just allow enough time for the star cookies to cool before decorating.
Otherwise, if you would like to plan ahead, they are good to be placed in the freezer until you need them.
Tip: If placing in the freezer, make sure that you place a layer of baking paper between each layer of cookies so that they don’t stick to each other.
Step 2:
Defrost the cookies and allow for a couple of hours before you start to decorate them.
Ice the top of the cookies. If your icing comes from a tub and not from a tube with a decorating spout (like mine was), place the icing into a piping bag. This will ensure that you have control over where the star pattern is maintained on the top of the cookie.
I pre-bought the icing, but you can make up your own if you wish.
Step 3:
Draw the outline of the star with the icing. Once happy with the outline, you can fill in the middle until all of the icing is in place.
Step 4:
Place some sprinkles on top of the icing for a finished look.
Tip: Depending on what icing you use, it can set pretty quickly. I found that with the pre-bought icing I was able to ice two cookies at a time and then added the sprinkles. If I had tried to ice more cookies, the icing would have set and the sprinkles would have fallen straight off.
It may seem a little fiddly to ice just a couple at a time. The temptation is certainly there to ice them all at once. But….and this is a big but….the frustration of your sprinkles not sticking to the icing is WAY more frustrating than doing a couple at a time. Yes I am totally speaking from experience here.
I decorated these cookies the day before the party, but they will last in an air tight container for a few days, so you can easily make them ahead of time if you want to.
The result was cute looking, and super tasty cookies.
Of course you can totally use this exact technique for any shape cookie you want. Cookie cutters are such an awesome invention don’t you think?
This is definitely a no fail shortbread cookie recipe, and you definitely won’t regret giving it a try.
