When my daughter requested to have a rockstar party for her 7th birthday, I knew that it was going to be bright, bold and a whole lot of fun.
This was a party theme that we could really go to town on.
My intention was to literally make everything pop. My daughter wanted hot pink and black which work awesome together.
Cupcakes are always a staple item at my kids birthday parties.
Partly because I like to have some cake available before the birthday cake is cut and partly because I love how creative they can be made to look.
Aside from the actual birthday cake, the cupcakes are usually the next stand out feature.
Besides, I don’t ever make the cake for the birthday party.
The birthday cake is the one thing that I splash out on and leave the professionals to do. I do however enjoy the challenge of creating some themed cupcakes.
These rockstar cupcakes were so simple to make but fitted the theme perfectly.
I had used some stars in other parts of the party decor, so it was easy to follow this through to the cupcakes.
How To Create Rockstar Cupcakes in 4 Easy Steps
As far as themed cupcakes go, these have to be one of the simplest to make.
In just four easy steps, these rockstar cupcakes will come to life.
Step 1: Create The Fondant Stars
A few days prior to needing them, you will need to prepare the fondant stars that will be placed on the top of the cupcakes.
Add some CMC powder to the fondant to ensure that it goes hard when it dries. Roll out the fondant and use a star cookie cutter to cut out the fondant stars.
Once cut, leave them flat to dry for a couple of days.
Whilst I was at it, I made a few extra little stars for her rock star birthday cake, but just the large stars were used for the cupcakes.
Step 2: Bake The Cupcakes
When it comes to baking the cupcakes, I always use a packet mix. I like to bake both chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for added variety.
If you have your own cupcake recipe that you love to use then go for it.
However if you want to keep things simple, there is no shame in using a packet.
I like to keep things as quick and simple as possible when preparing for a party, and that means the less fiddling around the better.
Step 3: Add Buttercream Topping
Once the cupcakes have cooled it is time to add on the buttercream topping.
Once again you can make your own buttercream if you wish. However, the last few parties I have organized I have pre-bought a tub of buttercream and it has saved SO much time.
Now there is no looking back for me.
All I needed to do was add the food coloring (in this case pink) to the buttercream and mix it in.
I then pipped the buttercream into a classic cupcake swirl pattern.
Step 4: Add The Fondant Stars
The fondant star is placed directly on the top of the buttercream swirl and gently pushed down.
Tip: If you are having the party the same day as creating the cupcakes, you can add the fondant star directly on the top of the buttercream.
If however you are preparing a day before, I recommend leaving the stars off until the day of the party. It will only take a minute or two to add the stars to the cupcakes, but it will ensure you don’t risk any moisture transfer.
The last thing you want is to have soggy fondant stars on display!
That’s really all you need to do to make these awesome looking rockstar cupcakes. Anyone can pull these off and they really look great on the party table.
Of course I always secretly hope that there are some left over’s so that I can indulge once the party has finished.
