Fire cupcakes. They are perfect to use for a camping themed party or a fireman party. The vibrant flame is fun and exciting and would perfectly suit either of these themes.
My son decided to have a fireman party for his 4th birthday. Where possible, we try and theme as much of the food as we can, and cupcakes are a definite on that list.
A table was planned for the party that consisted of buildings on fire, with lots of fire elements and fire engines.
The fire cupcakes were therefore perfect for creating another scene of fiery flames. We placed a fire engine at the bottom of the cupcake stand ready to extinguish the fire.
They were a lot of fun to make and really simple to. That’s definitely a win when creating party food.
How To Make The Fondant Flames For The Cupcakes
To make these fire cupcakes I decided to make fondant flames and add them to the top of colored buttercream.
Items Needed:
To make the fondant fire flames the following items are needed:
- Red fondant
- Yellow fondant
- Orange edible glitter
- Sharp Knife
- Round Cookie Cutter
I went searching for a flame fondant cutter without success. I didn’t see an option for a flame cookie cutter either, which meant I had to get a bit creative.
Considering I have zero cake decorating skills, if I can create these, then I promise you can too! Let’s get started.
10 Simple Steps To Amazing Fire Cupcakes
Step 1: Prepare the fondant by adding some CMC powder inside and mix together. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of mix to every pound of fondant and kneed together immediately.
The powder will ensure that the fondant hardens when left to dry.
Tip: Ensure that you only add the CMC powder to the fondant that you wish to use. The powder will harden the fondant and you will need to throw away any excess.
Place fondant that you are not using into a sandwich bag to ensure that it does not dry out and harden.
Step 2: Roll out the fondant to approximately 1/8 of an inch. Cut using a circle cookie cutter.
Step 3: With a sharp knife, cut off the bottom of the circle. This will create a flat base.
Step 4: Cut out three flames. Have the largest flame in the middle with two small ones on each side.
Step 5: Once the fondant template has been created, use this to create the others.
Step 6: Repeat the steps for both colors of fondant. The red flame needs to be larger than the yellow flame, so that the red can still be seen when the yellow flame is sitting on top of it.
It doesn’t matter if all the flames don’t exactly match. They are flames. The flames are supposed to all look different.
However if you prefer all the flames to look the same, create a template on paper first and use this to cut out the fondant flames.
Step 7: Draw some wavy lines into the yellow flame for texture. Use either a knife of a fondant tool to do this.
Step 8: Place the bases onto a lined baking tray and leave to harden for approximately 2 days.
Step 9: Use fondant glue (available from any cake store) and paint the back of the yellow flame.
Gently press the yellow flame onto the top of the red flame and leave to set.
Step 10: Once the fondant glue has dried, add some orange glitter over the top of the lines that were drawn into the yellow flame. This will add some shimmer and sparkle to the flame.
Put the fondant toppers aside until you are ready to add them to the cupcakes.
How To Make The Icing Look Like Fire
There are a few options of how to make the buttercream icing look like fire. One option is to create rainbow swirl cupcakes using fire colors.
Typical colors to use to create the fire effect would be red, yellow and orange.
However these fire cupcakes had a fire fondant topper, and too much coloring underneath would be distracting.
For this reason, I chose to stick with a yellow buttercream swirl to complement the topper rather than compete with it.
To do this, simply make (or pre-buy) the butter cream vanilla frosting and add to the cupcake with a classic cupcake swirl.
The fondant topper will be sitting on the top, so don’t worry if the swirl doesn’t look absolutely perfect!
Add The Fondant Flame To Complete The Fire Cupcakes
Fondant will go moist once it has been added to the top of the buttercream. For this reason it is recommended that the fondant flame topper is not added to the cupcakes until you actually want to use them.
Whilst the cupcakes can be baked and frosted the day prior, it is advisable to keep the toppers aside and add them to the cupcakes just before they are needed.
It doesn’t take long to add them, and it means that the fire cupcakes will look their absolute best.
Store the fondant toppers in an air tight container until you need them.
Add the fondant flames slightly on the side of the cupcake and push down gently. This will look like the flame is coming up from the cupcake giving it height, rather than just sitting flat on top.
Add the flame cupcakes to a cupcake stand for maximum effect. The tower of cupcakes will all combine together to create a bright fiery effect.
Whether you are planning a fireman birthday party or a camping party, these fire cupcakes will be the perfect accompaniment to the food table.
They are bright and vibrant and a whole lot of fun.
These fire cupcakes are something that anyone can make regardless of your baking skills.
Have fun with it, don’t worry about everything being too “Matchy” and I promise that these cupcakes will look sensational when have finished.
