I created this butterfly theme party for my daughter’s 1st birthday. I wanted something that was simple, but special and something that reflected her cheeky personality. T
his was also the first party that I held that made me fall in love with the party planning process.
This is definitely a party that shows that literally anyone can hold a party whether you have experience or not, and that party will be super special with just a few simple touches.
1st birthday parties are always special. As kids grow their birthday’s can kind of muddle in together, but you will always remember your child’s first birthday. Its these special occasions that stay in our memory banks and for this reason we want to create something that not only the little guests will enjoy, but something that we can look back and smile on.
Choosing a themed party will also help to give direction as it provides ideas for party colors, food and fun games (if the children are old enough).
This butterfly theme party that I chose for my daughter’s first birthday would also be perfect for a baby shower or christening and the ideas I used are super easy for literally anyone to recreate.

For my daughter’s first birthday I wanted to hold a party that was bright and colorful but also something that displayed her personality. I settled on a butterfly theme party with the color scheme of bright pink and yellow.
There are literally hundred’s of party themes that you could choose for your child. Choosing one can seem like opening a can of worms. The best advice I can give is to choose a theme that has some meaning to you and your child. It helps to narrow down the choices at least.
So why did I choose a butterfly party for my daughter’s first birthday?
A few months prior to her birthday we had visited a butterfly farm and from the moment we entered the farm, she was absolutely enthralled by them. I also am always calling her my social butterfly, so it seemed like the perfect theme and something that we could all have so much fun with.
So a butterfly party it was!
This post will go through all the stages of putting together that party which will will be super easy for you to follow and create your own magical butterfly birthday party.
Butterfly Party Invitation
Whilst it can be tempting to skip on invitations and just choose word of mouth, there are a couple of reasons why a physical invitation is SO important.
- We live in a society that is getting busier and busier. Due to the hectic nature of our lifestyles it is simply easy to forget things. A printed invitation that can be placed on the kitchen fridge can help to remind guests that a party is on the horizon. I always print one for my own fridge too, just to help build up the excitement for the party.
- The invitation sets the scene for the party. It gives guests a great idea as to what to expect at the party. When guests received this invitation it was pretty clear that the theme was to revolve around butterflies. I also loved this party invitation for the garden feel and the added personalization.
Easy Butterfly Party Decoration
One of the great thing about this party theme is that there are no shortage of butterfly party supplies.
I wanted to include lots and lots of butterflies to recreate the butterfly wonderland we had experienced at the farm. Butterflies were therefore included absolutely everywhere in the party decoration.
I purchased lots of beautiful butterflies to scatter around the entire party area. They were placed on chairs, the pergola, literally anywhere that needed some butterfly sparkle! All the butterflies looked so realistic, they were absolutely stunning.
The party table was situated next to an otherwise dull looking wall. To brighten this up, I placed a simple piece of sparkly light yellow material in front of the wall and covered the material in more butterflies. This distracted the eyes away from the ugly looking bricks but also worked perfectly for filling in the space.
My absolute favorite decoration was the butterfly canvas which was made out of her two foot prints.
This is something really special to have as a keepsake and it looked so incredibly cute.
I also had a special bib designed with a butterfly and a number 1, so she could still be in the party spirit when eating her cake.
It always seems such a shame to cover the gorgeous party dress with a bib, so this was the perfect solution.
As a lovely addition to the butterfly decor I purchased paper lanterns and bright helium balloons. These added an extra splash of color and an added dimension.
Other suitable party decoration could include butterfly cut outs or butterfly balloons. Even some butterfly foil balloons would look great and also help fill up the space.
You can include as much or as little as you want to.
Simple Butterfly Party Food
As this was the first time I had undertaken a kids party, the food table was kept pretty simple. There was some food that was themed to be butterfly specific but most of it was just practical.
The party food consisted of mainly home cooked treats such as mini quiches, sausage rolls, chocolate crackles, fairy bread, cupcakes, cookies and chocolate covered strawberries.
The important thing was that all of this food was food that my daughter loved to eat.
I was incredibly excited with the cupcakes that I made as they were my first attempt with fondant decoration. The butterflies on the top looked so pretty.
The stand out feature was however the butterfly birthday cake. The cake was shaped into a number one with a gorgeous fondant butterfly perched on the top.
The cake was where I splashed out on the budget as I really want to have a feature piece on the table and have something a little bit extra special. The cake was perfect.
The butterfly on the top was also super cheeky, which represented my daughter’s personality perfectly.
Butterfly Party Favors
As this was for a first birthday celebration I wanted to keep the party favors very simple.
Instead of preparing goodie bags for the kids, I decided to bake chocolate butterfly sugar cookies using butterfly cookie cutters. Each cookie was then wrapped in a clear favor bag and tied together with a gorgeous butterfly and pink ribbon.
The cookies were an absolute hit with the party guests and also a fun way to give a simple party favor. Not only did they look great on display, but they were easy to organise and tasted delicious!
It also meant that I didn’t have to worry about coordinating small party favors which I felt that the one year olds really didn’t need.
Another thing to consider at the party is the entertainment. Whilst this was a 1st birthday party, the entertainment should still not be skipped. To ensure that the kids remain entertained throughout the party with some fun activities, be sure to also check out this list of 20 of the best toddler activities and games.

Of course this post would not be complete without showing a photo of the birthday girl herself.
So here is my social butterfly after tucking into a huge piece of her birthday cake. The cheeky look on her face just goes to show that she had an absolute ball.

Hi Catherine, I am currently planning my daughter’s 1st birthday, which happens to be butterfly theme. I absolutely love the personalized butterfly canvas with her 2 footprints. I would like to recreate that for my daughter. Can you tell me how you went about doing that? Her birthday is in 10 days!
Oh how exciting Rewa, I hope you have a wonderful time with her.
My daughter’s 1st birthday was before I started blogging properly, so unfortunately I don’t have any tutorials or anything, so I will try an explain as best as I can 🙂
Basically the wings were made out of her feet and the body was self drawn. I started with the feet. The left foot is the right wing and the right foot is the left wing.
I simply painted the bottom of her foot and then placed it in the middle of the canvas. This was a two person job to hold hands etc out of the way! After the first foot was done, we cleaned it, and then painted the second foot (leaving a small space between the feet to draw the body).
Once the feet were finished, I drew the body in the middle, and once the body was dry I added the little face. The writing on the bottom was a complete after thought. If I was to do that now, I would stencil it to make it a lot neater.
Does that help at all?
