Firstly you need to decide what type of cake to bake. This really could be anything, it is completely personal choice.
This cake is a chocolate mud, purely because my kids are obsessed with it. But you can make a rainbow cake if you wish!
Once you know what cake you will be baking, you will require the following ingredients for it’s decoration.

8 Steps To An Awesome Iron Man Cake
Step 1: Bake The Cake
It really doesn’t matter what flavor cake you choose to make, or whether you choose a packet cake or a cake made from scratch.
I always make a chocolate mud cake for my kids, purely through their request. But mud cakes are also great for decorating because they are nice and sturdy.
Step 2: Set Up The Cake
Before you start to decorate the cake, it needs to be set up on a cake board. The cake board should always be slightly larger than the cake itself.
So for instance, if using an 8″ cake, then it should sit on a 10″ board.
If using a 10″ cake, it should ideally sit on a 12″ board.
Step 3: Add Ganache
This step is optional but definitely helps to create a wow factor in your cake and make it feel that little bit more professional.
If the cake baked is also quite large, then it helps to break up the cake into layers. But again, this is personal preference.
Step 4: Add Iron Man
Iron man is of course to be the star of this cake!
The Iron man character used for this cake was obtained from a cake shop, but really any Iron man will do.
To ensure that we didn’t loose too much of the cake, I chose to have Iron man sit on the top. This meant that only a small section of cake needed to be cut away to allow his bottom to sit into.
Otherwise if you would prefer him to stand, you will need to remove a large section of the middle of the cake to enable him to fit in.
Place Iron man into position and cut around him to ensure that you only take out sections of the cake that you need to.
Once you are happy with his location, keep cutting away at the cake until you are happy that he is firmly sitting in the cake.
Notice that his feet are still above the top of the cake?
This is alright, because you are going to cover his feet with buttercream and boulders!
You don’t want to loose too much cake, so only cut enough away to make him secure.
Step 5: Add The Buttercream
The great thing about this cake decoration is that the buttercream doesn’t need to look perfect and smooth. This is a rough looking cake, which makes it even easier for everyone to make!
Butter cream can either be pre-purchased or made with icing sugar, cocoa powder and a good electric mixer.
To make life simple, I used the Betty Crocker chocolate frosting which worked perfectly. It was quick and easy, which meant less stress!
Ensure that the sides of the cake are fully covered before moving onto the top decoration.
Iron man should be firmly in place, so now is the time to literally cover the top of the cake (and Iron man’s legs) with butter cream.
Make sure that the only part of him that can be seen is the top half of his body, as it wants to look like he is breaking free from the cake.
Smooth the buttercream down, but don’t make it too smooth as the roughness adds to the effect of the finished cake.
Step 6: Add Chocolate Boulders
To give the illusion of Iron man breaking free, I added thin chocolate chunks to the top of the cake, especially around Iron man himself.
I used Cadbury Furry Friends bars as they are a nice thin chocolate and easy to break.
Scatter them around the top of the cake.
Step 7: Sprinkle Gold Toppings
Around the top of the cake, sprinkle some gold sugar pearls and some gold leaves for an extra pop of color.
Step 8: Add Extra Decorations
This step is optional, but a nice way to complete the look of the cake is to add a ribbon around the bottom.
This is also great for hiding any buttercream mess when the cake meets the board!
A red or a gold ribbon would look great here.
For an added element of fun, I added the number 6 into Iron man’s hand. This looked great breaking free holding up the birthday boy’s age.
That’s it.
Your amazing and totally easy Iron man cake is complete.
You will definitely hear “WOW” as you present this cake to your Iron man fan.
Whilst achieving a professional looking cake can sometimes feel impossible, it can also be relatively simple when broken down into easy steps.
This is definitely one of those cakes that can be made with zero cake decorating skills!
And the bonus is that the birthday boy also gets a new Iron man toy to play with afterwards!
