Planning an outdoor event and looking for some outdoor party decoration ideas? 

An outdoor celebration is a popular choice in the warm weather with balmy evenings. It is the perfect opportunity to get out in the fresh air and entertain with friends.

Outdoor entertaining is however even a popular choice in the colder months. With the correct preparation, a backyard event is a great idea.

The great thing is that regardless of whether you are hosting a birthday party, engagement party or even just a simple gathering of friends, an outdoor space can be easily decorated. 

The simple decorations that you choose will influence the overall feel and vibe of your party.

Whilst we have included a lot of easy outdoor party decor ideas, you certainly don’t want to use them all.

Choose the ones that are best suited to the style of party you are creating.  

A few simple pieces will always look better than a little bit of everything!

1. Lighting Up Your Outdoor Space

When it comes to outdoor party decor ideas, the lighting has to be the number one priority.

Lighting is a great way to add an instant vibe to your party and the type of lighting chosen will also have a huge impact.

It is a good idea to think about the overall vibe you want to achieve at your party and start there.

Do you want everything to be lit up brightly or do you want simple mood lighting?

Simple String Lights: Fairy lights make a great option for lighting outdoor parties. They are simple to style with, can be used anywhere and they are also cost effective.

Use many different sets of string lights and drape them all over the outdoor area. You don’t really have to have any styling knowledge to use string lights and they will instantly change up the feel and vibe of your area.

String Bulbs: For a more contemporary look, use string bulb lighting. Drape them between tree branches, across a fence line or hook under the pergola roof. They are guaranteed to look fab.

Mason Jars With Tea Lights: Mason jars are great to use for party styling and can instantly take any area from drab to fab. Use with tea lights or candles inside.

Paper Lanterns: Paper lanterns add to a bohemian vibe and always look gorgeous. Choose simple white paper lanterns or lanterns of color. You wont however be disappointed with this simple style of lighting. They also look beautiful used in conjunction with string lights. 

Tiki Torches: For a tropical vibe, tiki torches are a great touch. Just ensure that care is taken to the placement of them so guests will not bump into them and they wont catch light to any of your garden trees or bushes!

Neon signs: Neon signs are a lot of fun and perfect for an outdoor space. The signs can be obtained in all kinds of sayings and will bring a fun vibe to the party.

2. Outdoor Rugs

Using an outdoor rug might not be the first thing that comes to mind when decorating an outdoor space, but it can make a huge difference to the seating areas.

Outdoor rugs can help break up the seating areas and clearly mark out a defined seating space.

For a more relaxed vibe, you may also wish to place cushions and throws onto the rug to encourage guests to relax and unwind.

If on a budget, a lot of these items can be found in a thrift shop.

3. Define The Seating

Comfortable outdoor seating areas at a party doesn’t have to be created just with chairs. Let’s face it, not many of us have an extended amount of patio furniture to cater for a number of people.

As discussed previously, an outdoor rug with cushions and throws makes an awesome seating area that is also easy to coordinate.

Alternatively, bean bags and outdoor pillows also provide a lot more easy seating options. If kids are coming to the party, then they will also love these!

The advantage of having this kind of casual seating is that guests can easily move them around to suit and people wont feel locked into sitting at arrangements that have been pre-organised.

​If you have a larger amount of party guests, ensure that you create several small seating arrangements to allow for easier conversation. 

4. Take The Indoors Outdoors

Not everyone has a large amount of patio furniture or want to hire it.

Another option is to simply bring some of the indoor furniture to the outdoors. This is obviously weather permitting, but things like dining table and chairs are easy to bring outside. This would be especially fun if hosting a dinner party.

Alternatively go hunting in thrift stores for furniture which could be used. Think about items such as ottomans and coffee tables which can be scattered about.

5. Decorate With Shade

Hosting an outdoor party always comes with the risk of bad weather. Even parties held in the middle of summer can be hit with unexpected weather.

It’s therefore a good idea to prepare for some shaded area just in case.

But this shade can also add to the decor of your party.

Whilst you may already have an undercover area attached to the house, having extra is never going to hurt.

Utilise a cabana tent or a gazebo to place food and seating under.

Decorate the top of the tent roof with string lights and it will look amazing.

Further style the tent however you want with lanterns, flowers, streamers (all of which will be discussed further on).

Depending how often you like to entertain, you could consider buying them, otherwise renting is always a great option.

If your party is being held in the day and it’s in the warmer months, then you will need to ensure you have catered for adequate sun shade.

​Place seating arrangements under trees or other shady spots. If there isn’t enough shade then you will need to create it.

Garden umbrella’s are a great easy option that can also be moved around as needed.

6. Utilise Water Features

Do you have a pool, hot tub or water feature in the yard?

Even if you don’t plan on actually using them, they are a fun way of adding to the party decor.

Set lights and seating around these areas to encourage party guests to congregate there. It’s a simple spot for conversation.

This is a great way of utilising what you already have without actually creating any added work.

7. Party Backdrop

The perfect way to create a party feature is to have a party backdrop. This can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.

An easy party backdrop can be created simply by using plastic tablecloths.

Alternatively wood panels, wood pallets or artificial grass wall panels are perfect for an outdoor space. 

8. Fresh flowers

Flowers are always beautiful for styling with and what better place to use them than in your backyard.

Choose between large or small flower arrangements for a different feel.

A small amount of flowers placed in glass or mason jars and scattered around the party area always looks gorgeous.

Think about the colors and types of flowers that you wish to use as this.

Do you want simple and elegant or bright colors? 

The flowers you choose will ultimately affect the overall style that is achieved.

9. Balloons

Just because a party is outside, it doesn’t mean that you cant use balloons.

Whilst you might initially think of only using balloons at kids parties, they can actually be a stylish addition to adults parties too.

Choose the colors wisely and they can look absolutely amazing.

There are many different ways to style balloons at parties. Just ensure that balloons are not placed in direct strong sunlight for too long to avoid them popping.

Using a balloon garland is a very popular styling option. A balloon garland creates a fantastic entry way, a focal point for photos or even above food tables.

Gathering balloons together in bunches look great hanging from ceilings, or add some helium to them and stand on balloon weights. This method will however be harder to keep under control in windy conditions.

10. Tissue Paper Pom Poms

Tissue paper pom poms are a great source of decoration, and can either be purchased pre-made or you could easily make them yourself.

Simply choose the color that you wish to use and create as many as you like. Hang them in groups, or individually.

They also look great up against a party backdrop or used to style the edges of a photo booth.

Be sure to use them undercover if there is any hint of the slightest bit of rain otherwise the pom poms will turn to mush pretty quickly.

11. Paper Fans

Paper fans can look very pretty and can instantly add a pop of color to your outdoor space. 

Unless you are planning a vibrant party, stick to just 2-3 colors. Gather them together in different sizes to add more flare and then place them at different heights to add further interest.

12. Streamers And Banners

The thought of using streamers and banners might initially seem childish, but it really depends how you use them.

Pick colors carefully and place strategically around the party area. If they are used all over it might look a bit overboard and not give the vibe you intend.

Streamers are also really good to use in creating a backdrop to a food table or a photo booth.

13. Go Low Key

If the outside decoration still feels overwhelming with too many options to choose from, then the best thing to do is stick to low key decor.

Low key doesn’t mean boring, in fact it is the total opposite.

You can create an area that is completely next level simply by choosing one lighting option and adding a few throw cushions and blankets.

Whilst coordinating flowers, lanterns, photo booths and other decor items would be fun, it isn’t necessary if its going to cause stress.

Think the “less is more” scenario. 

The best way to decorate your own backyard is to pick a style that will help your guests have a great time.

There is no perfect place to add party decor.

Decorating literally is a case of what feels best in the space that you have and what will complement the vibe that you are trying to achieve.

It’s fun, it’s fresh and it’s perfect for a summer or a Mexican fiesta style theme party.

Rather than purchasing cactus shaped balloons, why not try making them yourself. The kids will love the DIY project and your cactus balloons will be totally unique.

Materials You Will Need To Make Cactus Balloons

Ensure that you have all the materials ready before you commence your project. You will need to obtain the following:

• Green balloons of varying colors and sizes
• Helium
• Small pom poms
• String
• Glue gun or double sided tape
• Scissors
• Black marker

6 Easy Steps To Adorable Cactus Balloons

These cactus balloons are going to require a little bit of helium. It’s easy to hire a small helium canister from your local party store, alternatively you can buy canisters for small projects.

Step 1: Fill the balloons with some helium and tie a firm knot in the end. You will need to fill some large balloons for the base of the cactus balloons and some smaller ones for the top.

Step 2: Tie a piece of string to the bottom of the larger balloons, securely around the knot.

Step 3: Using a black marker, draw some spikes onto the balloons. Simply draw some upside down ‘V’s to look like the spikes.

This is a fun activity for the kids to do, but just remind them not to press to hard on the balloons to avoid them popping!

Add the spikes to the large and small balloons before moving onto the next step.

Step 4: Once the spikes have all been added, you will need to use a glue gun to attach the smaller balloons to the larger balloon base.

Ensure that the glue gun has been set to the lowest setting and allow the glue to heat up before proceeding.

Use a small amount of warm (not hot) glue to add to the bottom of the small balloons. Gently press the two balloons together.

Add the small balloons at various angles to create different looking cactus balloons.

Note: It is important to ensure that the glue is warm but not hot. If the glue is too hot, then this can cause the balloons to pop.

If you don’t feel confident in using a glue gun, double sided tape could also work well.

Step 5: With the glue gun still on it’s lowest setting, add the pop poms to mimic the dessert blooms. Add as many pom poms as desirable.

Again, use the double sided tape if you don’t wish to use the glue gun.

Step 6: The cactus balloons are now ready for display at your party. Hold the string down to a table with some tape, add to some party weights, or even sit them on top of a plant pot.

The helium will generally last in the balloons for 5-6 hours, so you will need to make the cactus balloons just prior to your event.

If you are a little worried about how easy they are to make, it would be a good idea to have a practice on one or two prior to the event, so you know that you can whip them up with confidence on the day.

Otherwise, let the kids loose with the project whilst you concentrate on completing the other party details.

Plus, it looks fantastic with any party theme you are holding as all you need to do is change the tablecloth colors you use.

I have used it SO many times and it has never failed me.

2. Paper Plate Photo Backdrop

This is an awesome tutorial for a bright and cheerful table backdrop.

When you can literally make this backdrop from packets of plates you pick up form the dollar store, this is one backdrop that you will repeat over and over.

Simply change the color plates to suit the theme of your party and bingo.

3. Wrapping Paper Garland and Backdrop

There are so many ways that you could use this backdrop. For a candy, ice cream or lemonade stall. Or you could use it as a backdrop to a shop, a garage or even a barn. Use the main structure and be creative with the decor to completely change up the look.

This is a party table backdrop that you can have a whole lot of creative fun with.

Decorating for parties is fun. It’s a time where you can let that inner child out of you and really go to town with creating a party wonderland.

Party decoration doesn’t have to be expensive either. With a little bit of know how, a magical environment can be created on a strict budget.

That’s where plastic tablecloths are my best friend for party decor. They can be purchased from dollar stores, are weather resistant and they are available in so many wonderful colors that you can use them for literally every single party you hold.

There are a few things that I like to have standard for my decoration. One is to have a party backdrop behind the food table and the other is to decorate the ceilings. Neither of which I want to spend a lot of money on!

For my daughter’s Trolls themed birthday party I wanted to have A LOT of decoration everywhere.

Let’s face it, Trolls parties go overboard, so just having a backdrop wasn’t enough.

I created this plastic tablecloth ceiling decoration to make a big impact and it certainly did just that.

It was so big you literally couldn’t miss it, and it did the trick of brightening up the dull pergola.

Materials Required For The Plastic Tablecloth Ceiling Decoration

Creating this decoration is easy therefore the list of materials you need is also easy. All you will need is:

• Plastic Tablecloth’s (Color of your choice)
• Hula Hoop
• Scissors
• Heavy Duty String or Twine

Create A Magical Plastic Tablecloth Chandelier

By creating a plastic tablecloth chandelier you are creating a statement ceiling piece. It is definitely going to be noticed by everyone and you can make it look as bright and bold or as gently and pastel as you would like.

Simply choose your tablecloth color of choice and follow the tutorial below.

Step 1: Place Tablecloths On Top Of Each Other

Ensure you have all the tablecloth colors and the hula hoop ready to go.

Start by placing all the tablecloth colors on top of each other (a couple of sheets of each color). Ensure that the tablecloth’s have been opened out properly.

Step 2: Cut The Lengths

Carefully start cutting down the length of all the tablecloth’s. I cut strips of about 5 cm wide.

Don’t worry too much about the strips being perfectly straight as once they are hanging it won’t notice at all.

If however you want the thickness of the strips to be exactly the same, you will need to hold the tablecloth’s together with a clip whilst cutting. This is not however something that I concerned myself with.

Step 3: Cut A Slit Into The Top Of The Strips

Once all the strips are cut you will need to make a slit in the top of the strip to allow for a tie around the hula hoop.

A slit of 8-10 cm long will be sufficient.

Step 4: Tie The Tablecloth Strips To The Hula Hoop

Using the slit that you just cut, attach the strip of tablecloth to the hula hoop.

Use the slit to tie the ends around the hula hoop.

Ensure that you keep all the ties at the top of the hula hoop together with the rest of the strip hanging down.

Step 5: Alternate Colors If Using More Than One

If using more than one color, alternative the colors as you tie them to the hula hoop.

Otherwise repeat with the same color.

Continue to tie around the hula hoop until the entire hula hoop is covered with strips.

Step 6: Hang The Ceiling Decoration

Once complete you will need to hang to the ceiling.

Measure the hula hoop and make a mark at the middle points. Tie the thick string to this point and use this to attach to the ceiling.

How Do You Hang Party Decorations From The Ceiling?

So you might be living this plastic tablecloth ceiling decoration but inside your head you are thinking “how the heck am I going to hang this from the ceiling?

I used this ceiling decoration at an outside party, so I was able to hang it from the pergola. I simply tied the string to both sides of the hula hoop and hooked it over the hanging beans.

Not everyone however has a pergola, especially if you are going to be holding your party inside!

If you are lacking pergola beams then I recommend that you add a removable hook to the ceiling and attach the string to the hook.

You will need to ensure that you have a middle point of the string to hang from. Also ensure that you use a large enough hook to take the weight of the chandelier.

Plastic Tablecloth Ceiling Decoration Hanging in Glory

There is no mistaking that your guests CAN NOT miss this plastic tablecloth ceiling decoration.

You started with a simple hula hoop and not is has been transformed. Can you imagine this being a feature in your chosen colors for your next party?

I made two of these plastic tablecloth ceiling decorations and I hung both of them from the pergola with a pinata in the middle.

Here is a peek of what they looked like hung at my daughter’s Trolls birthday party.

This is the type of party decoration that you can complete in the evening whilst watching the TV. You don’t need to have any craft skills and it takes very little concentration so you can still enjoy your TV show.

All it takes it a bit of time and some patience. If you are willing to work with that, this is a decoration you can repeat time and time again.

This decoration would also look good with recycled tablecloths. If you have some lying around that you want to use up, this is a great use for them. It doesn’t matter if they are a bit torn in places because you won’t notice when they are hanging from the ceiling.

I love how you can be so creative with such simple techniques.

For example, you could also use the same principle and instead of using plastic tablecloth’s, use lights instead to create a hanging chandelier. Or maybe you could use a combination of both!

Things You Will Need To Make Your Tissue Paper Tassels

There is nothing worse than seeing an awesome decoration idea, but when you look at the tutorial it requires a million implements and 10 hands to complete the project.

I know, I have been there, I have tried and I have failed. Miserably!

You will be pleased to hear that this tissue paper garland is NOT one of those crafts.

You also don’t need a huge amount of supplies to make the garland which is also a big relief.

Here you will find a list of all the items you will need. The only thing you are likely to have to go and buy is the actual tissue paper!

   5. Curling Ribbon

10 Steps To An Amazing Party Garland

Learn how to make a tassel garland in just 10 simple steps. Yes there are a lot of steps, but they are all incredibly easy.

Let’s go!

Step 1: Spread the tissue paper out flat on a bench and smooth out the creases.

Don’t worry about being too fussy with these creases as they really won’t notice when the garland is made.

Step 2: Fold the tissue paper in half.

Step 3: Fold the paper in half again.

I did mention that these steps were easy didn’t I!

Step 4: Cut along the side folds, leaving your main fold at the top.

Step 5: With your fold remaining at the top, measure approximately 2.5 cm down. Draw a line with a pencil.

Step 6: From the bottom of the tissue paper, you will need to cut straight lines up to the pencil mark that you have drawn.

Once again you don’t need to be too concerned with how straight these lines are.

If you really wish to have super straight lines and tassels of equal size, you can measure and then cut, but if you want to achieve the job in half the time, it’s really not necessary.

Step 7: Open up the tissue paper.

You should see that the uncut portion of the tissue paper is now sitting in the middle.

Step 8: Focusing on the middle uncut section, start rolling the sheets over each other.

Try and keep these twists as tight as possible.

Step 9: Once rolled, twist the centre section and form a loop.

Step 10: Secure in place with a piece of curling ribbon.

There you have it. Your tissue paper garland piece is complete.

Now simply repeat the process and make the garland as long as you wish.

To put all the pieces together, simply thread some curling ribbon or twine through the loops and hang where you please.

It can be a little time consuming to make several garments, but the savings on the wallet will be so worth it.

Why not even get a few friends together and make an evening of it. You can sit, chat, drink some wine and make a whole bunch of tissue paper garlands in no time at all.

Is A Photo Backdrop The Same As A Party Backdrop?

A backdrop is a backdrop. Whether you choose to use it as a party backdrop or a photo backdrop is entirely up to you.

The party backdrop in the tutorial below, was used to sit behind a food table at a party. There is however nothing stopping you from using it as a photo backdrop. In fact it would be the perfect backdrop. If you do wish to use it as a photo backdrop, don’t forget to grab some party props to make the photos more exciting and fun.

I generally hold my kids parties before their birthday’s and then leave the backdrop up for a week or two. The backdrop then serves as a wonderful photo backdrop on their actual birthday and we sit the kids in front of it with their birthday cake. It looks great in the photos!

This backdrop can be used behind a food table or as photography backdrops at so many different events such as a baby shower, bridal showers, mother’s day, fathers day or even as a photo wedding backdrop.

Simply change the colors to suit your needs and use it as you wish. Your party guests will love it.

How To Make A Tablecloth Backdrop In 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Pick 3 plastic table cloth colors, unfold them and lay them on top of each other. It doesn’t matter what order the colors go in, as they will get mixed up later.

If however you use more table cloth’s to cover a larger area, keep the colors in the same order.

Step 2: Fix the tablecloths together with staples.

I put them about 30 cm apart, but you can put them wherever you feel comfortable.

Step 3: Hang the tablecloths where you wish to have your party backdrop and fix to the wall. The method you use to fix this up will depend on what you are attaching it to.

My party backdrop was outside, so I simply used sticky table, but you might want to use removable hooks if inside.

Start cutting the tablecloth from the bottom all the way up the length stopping approximately 30 cm from the top.

Tip: Cut all 3 tablecloths at once, and simply slice (rather than cut) with the scissors. Don’t get too hung up on the cut being straight or if a few minor tears happen.

Trust me – it won’t notice at the end!

Step 4: With each section you have cut, take the 3 pieces of tablecloth and start braiding.

You can braid as far down as you like, but I found just a simple small braid at the top was sufficient.

Step 5: (Optional depending on the length of your backdrop). The area I needed to cover for my party backdrop was very large, so I used three sets of tablecloths.

In the middle of the sets, I placed some simple strands of tablecloth simply to fill in the gap and add a bit more character.

Step 6: Stand back and admire the most awesome but super easy party backdrop you have ever made.

If you didn’t want to use this behind your party table, it would also make a great backdrop for a photo booth.

I styled this for my daughter’s princess party and it worked a treat.

How To Make An Easy DIY Party Backdrop

Learn how to make the easiest DIY party backdrop. This is a cheap and easy backdrop that can be prepared for an indoor or outdoor party.

Made using budget plastic tablecloths, it can be prepared the day before the party saving you time on the day.

Materials

• Plastic Tablecloths in 3 different colors to cerate one section.
• The number of tablecloths required will depend on the area to be covered. Each section will require 3 tablecloths.
• Stapler
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Lay the 3 colored tablecloths on top of each other.
2. Fix together at the top with staples, approximately 30cm apart.
3. Hang the tablecloths to the wall and fix in place. Ensure that the stapled sections are at the top.
4. Cut the tablecloth into strips starting from the bottom and working towards the top. Stop approximately 30cm from the top. (Ensure that all 3 tablecloths are cut at the same time).
5. Take each section and start braiding from the top. Fix the braid in place with a staple.

Notes

Don't worry if the cutting of he tablecloths gets a bit messy or uneven. It wont notice once the backdrop is finished.

The above tutorial is for one section of the backdrop. Repeat the process to increase the size of the backdrop.

Sometimes when you can’t have the Hawaiian beach vacation you have to make the beach come to you.

When I was a kid my parents loved to throw luau style parties in the summer. It was always a blast!

Lots of luau food, music, swimming and fun. We also all got to wear hula skirts and leis. That was my favorite part and attempting to hula dance.

If you are having a Hawaiian or summer bash, making leis are an easy party do it yourself. This diy tissue paper lei is easy to make and guests will love it!

You can also pick any colors or color combination. I love this pink and orange together.

Lately I have loved making things with tissue paper because there are so many simple party decorations you can make with it.

What You Need To Make Hawaiian Leis With Tissue Paper 

There are are a few simple materials that you need to make these paper leis. Grab them and then follow the easy tutorial.

• Jute rope or ribbon
• Colorful tissue paper
• Scissors

5 Simple Steps To A Tissue Paper Lei

Step 1: Cut the tissue paper into pieces about 3 inches wide and 2 inches long.  Twist the middle inch together as shown below.

Step 2: Tie one piece of tissue paper around the rope or ribbon.

Tie a second piece in the same color around or on top of the first one.

Step 3: Repeat with the second color next to the first.

You can use just one color but I like the alternating colors.

Step 4: Leave them slightly spread out about an inch in between colors. I used between 10 and 12 tied pieces for each lei.

Step 5: Fold down the pieces of tissue paper so they are all facing down and on the same side.

You can also glue on a few small fake flowers to the ends for an added decoration.

This is really such a simple way to make festive leis for a Hawaiian or summer pool parties.

Rather than have lots of “Dora” everywhere, I decided to pick out the Dora star and use this as a theme running through the party decor.

I made several Dora stars and scattered them around the party food and gift tables.  They looked fantastic and really helped to set the scene.  The great thing is that they were super easy to make and can easily be recreated for your next party!

To make the adorable star, all you need is the following:

 Paper mache stars

 A pack of googley eyes

 Paint (choice of colours is up to your preference)

 Ribbon

The Dora Explorer stars come in various colours, but the colours I had chosen for the party were yellow, purple and orange.

I didn’t want the party decoration to be overwhelming so I decided to keep all the stars in just the colour yellow.  You can choose whatever colour is suitable for your party.

Once dry, simply add the eyes and the smiley mouths.  To make it even easier for you, I have included a download of the smiley mouths here.  They are sized 2 cm high x 3.5cm wide.  Simply print them off, cut out and glue to your Dora star.

Finish off with a ribbon of your choice and your Dora star is complete.  How cheeky does it look?!

I knew I had the look just right when my daughter saw them and immediately shouted “DORA”!!  A little bit of creativity goes a long long way!
